The Benalla Breakers’ Under-14 side is newly crowned champions of the Wodonga Junior Basketball Tournament.
The Breakers won five straight games over the tournament, held over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, to win the tournament, and the bragging rights.
Benalla beat the Mansfield Eagles 30-21, the Yarrawonga-Mulwala Lakers 47-8, the Wagga Heat 51-13, and the Echuca Pirates 43-14 in pool play.
In the final, the Breakers faced last year’s tournament winners the Wodonga Wolves.
Structured play, team work, and the results of the previous matches, gave the Breakers an obvious edge over the opposition.
And by half-time the Breakers’ dominance had shone through, holding an 11-point lead.
That margin was maintained and increased in the second half, with the Breakers eventually running away with the score.
The visitors took home the main prize with a convincing win in the end against the Wolves, 41-24.
The Benalla Basketball Association fielded eight representative sides at the tournament.
The Under-12 boys and Under-18 girls also came close to places in their respective grand finals, both narrowly missing their chances on percentage points.
Benalla’s representative teams are looking forward to their next tournament when the BBA hosts its own competition on the weekend of February 24, 25 and 26.
The association is welcoming up to 84 junior teams from across the state for that tournament.
Meanwhile, the summer domestic competition continues every Monday and Thursday night and Vicinity Centres Aussie Hoops, Australia’s official junior development program for children aged five to 10 years, is entering its second week and is held at the stadium every Thursday from 3.45pm to 4.30pm.
