Benalla’s entry into the new regional open women’s AFL competition is a step closer.

Benalla’s entry into the new regional open women’s AFL competition is a step closer with 27 players attending the club’s first official training session on Friday.

The Saints’s senior coach Luke Morgan put the new team through its paces at Benalla Showgrounds in preparation for the start of the season.

The Benalla side is hopeful of being accepted into the new regional league which will be managed jointly by the AFL Goulburn Murray and Central regions.

The Saints will play against open women’s teams from across the Shepparton and Bendigo areas.

Morgan said he was excited about the enthusiasm and talent of the players.

‘‘It’s great for the community to now be able to offer women the opportunity to play football.

‘‘From here we need the community to support the team, particularly in its first season of competition,’’ he said.

Benalla Saints is currently looking for local businesses and organisations willing to sponsor the side.

‘‘As with any new team there are expenses related to new uniforms and equipment.

‘‘I’m confident that there is strong support from within the community and I urge people to get involved,’’ he said.

The club is also seeking expressions of interest from coaches to take the reigns in the inaugural season.

The team will continue to train at the Benalla Showgrounds on Friday nights from 6pm. All new players are welcome.

●Businesses interested in sponsoring the team can phone Darren Skelton on 0417368805. Prospective coaches are urged to phone Luke Morgan on 0425806694.
