Benalla resident Becky Webster has been named as vice captain of the Murray Bushrangers footy team.

Benalla resident and Mooroopna footy star Becky Webster has been named vice-captain of the Murray Bushrangers.

Webster, 16, and her team won round one of a statewide competition against the Bendigo Pioneers at Punt Road Oval on Saturday — their first win in three seasons.

The Bushrangers announced their Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Cup Girls squad last week, with Webster as vice-captain and Chloe Brain leading the line.

Webster said the 83-13 thrashing of Bendigo was a big achievement, the team’s first victory in three seasons.

‘‘We played against the Bendigo Pioneers in our opening game and we won for the first time in three years. It was an awesome feeling,’’ she said.

The Bushrangers’ talent manager Mick Wilson said it was a great achievement for the players who made the team.

“Forty-six players have been training since November, so to make the final squad of 25 is an outstanding achievement,” he said.

Webster played AusKick from age six, and believes the Bushrangers have the potential to cause headaches this season, with a lot of experience on the bench.

‘‘A lot of the team have been here for five, six seasons now, so there’s a bit of experience ... I think probably the (Dandenong) Stingrays and the Calder Cannons will be the two toughest teams, we struggled with them last year,’’ she said.

Coach Sam Ahmet said the team performed well throughout its two practice games and against Bendigo.

‘‘We played exceptionally well against Calder Cannons and Dandenong Stingrays, two of the more experienced and stronger TAC Cup Girls teams. The players have steadily improved throughout the pre season,’’ she said.

Ahmet said the leadership qualities of Webster and Brain were outstanding.

‘‘Both players are Vic Country representatives and demonstrate terrific leadership,’’ she said.
