Benalla Bowls Club
Benalla Bowls Club held the annual Symes Memorial Day competition during the weekend.
The club hosted teams from Euroa, Moira and Mansfield, and played matches in different formats across the day.
There were 72 players competing on the day.
The winners were L. Cocking and L. Byrne, of Euroa, with 49 points. Runner ups were S. Warfe and C. Cooney, of Benalla, with 48 points. Third was the husband and wife team of P and J Merkel.
Last Thursday evening saw 36 bowlers play in a corporate jackpot pairs event.
The winners on the night were J. Nicholls and Joan Lemin. Runner up T. Ryan and J. Turner.
On Saturday, an open social bowls event was held.
More than 30 bowlers played either in pairs or triples of two games of 12 ends.
Winners were R. Rigby, R. Lewis and M. Welsh. Runner ups were J. Schneeberger, J. Spinks and D. Lindsay.
Indoor Bowls was played on March 6 with 18 players, and three games of eight ends.
Winners were B. Mollison, M. Cromie and J. Lemin with three wins and 18 shots up.
Runner ups were B, Billman, G. Pryor and M. Nicholls.
Games on March 8 saw 14 players play three games of eight ends.
Winners were L. Brown, M. Nankervis and Jack Lemin. The runner ups were M. Welsh, B. Mollison, P. Robertson and R. Charlwood.
In the Swanpool bowls, March 4 saw the A3 team lose to Rutherglen and B1 lost to St James.
March 7 had Swanpool playing Moyhu and win easily by 30 shots. Lorraine’s team won by 26 shots, Shane’s team won by two shots, Brenda’s team won by two shots.
The three pennent teams did not make the top four, so the focus is now on club events.
Hughie Waugh Day was played on March 5 and social bowls continues.
The Easter Monday Tournament is being held on April 17 at 1pm and the Anzac Day Open Triples is on April 25.
Gordon Horner, a lon- time stalwart of the club, will be greatly missed, not only by Swanpool club, but other clubs also.
Senior Citizen Bowls
Saturday, March 11, had 23 players compete with the winners being G. Green (S), N. Elkan, V. Haag and H. Harper who registered three wins, 30 shots up.
Runner ups were F. Wright (S), M. Lyon and K. Black, who had two wins, eight shots up.
