Wallabies suffer first loss

Benalla Table Tennis Club ladder leaders Wallabies suffered their first defeat of the season when they capitulated to an aggressive Rosellas outfit last week.

Rosellas claimed a 5-0 victory in A-grade action. It was a magnificent effort from Rosellas, with Adrian Squires and Col Exton playing outstanding table tennis to win all their matches in a stylish display.

Possums had to fight hard to hold off a fired up Taipans unit, prevailing for a gallant 3-2 victory.

Michelle Feldtmann and Jeff Austen were in top form, posting a singles win each before taking the doubles in straight sets.

Lee Horan was the standout, winning both singles in a classy performance.

Meanwhile, in another close encounter, Echidnas just held on to overcome Plovers for a fine 3-2 victory.

Apoorv Saxena played impressively to account for both singles with Ray Grant performing well to combine with Saxena for a thrilling doubles victory to seal the match. An outstanding effort from John Bajada enabled Owls to chalk up a comfortable 4-1 victory over Kookaburras.

He played brilliantly to win both singles, with John Holschier showing improved technique to win one. They combined well to win the doubles in straight sets.


The talented Chris Lee led Mozzies to a convincing 4-1 victory over Frogs. He was in devastating form, producing many superb rallies to win both singles comfortably.

He had strong support from Richard Morton, who played extremely well to win a singles and then combined with Lee for a tight three-set doubles victory.

Redbacks fought back to hold off a determined Eagles unit, going on to a solid 3-2 victory.

Redbacks stayed focused to win a singles match each before Nicole Irwin starred in the doubles victory.

Beth Grant was the star player, accounting for both singles in a sensational display.

Wombats enjoyed their 4-1 victory over Bullants with Graeme Greed accounting for both singles.

Numbats had to produce their best to overcome a determined Gliders unit, scoring a convincing 4-1 victory.


Koalas shrugged off a determined Doves outfit for an impressive 3-2 victory.

Talented juniors James Young and Jackson Squires played strongly under pressure, winning a singles each and then wrapped up the match with a thrilling 18-21, 21-7, 23-21 victory.

Hawks were too strong for Crickets, with Helen Sharp in outstanding form to lead her team to a 4-1 victory.

She accounted for both singles, with teammate Carol Chay chipping in for one.

Avalon Arifin was at his best to lead Falcons to a tight 3-2 victory over Magpies.

He won both singles and then teamed with Andrea Cathcart for a straight sets doubles victory.


A-grade: Wallabies 24, Owls 20, Rosellas 16, Taipans, Kookaburras, Possums 12, Plovers 4.

B-grade: Mozzies, Numbats 24, Redbacks, Eagles 16, Gliders 12, Frogs, Wombats 8, Bullants 4.

C-grade: Koalas 24, Magpies, Falcons 20, Hawks 16, Doves 4, Crickets 0.
