Benalla’s Zak Best has produced a top drive in his first crack at Formula 4 racing.
Best joined AGI Sport for the first two rounds of the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship, which was held during the weekend.
Best, 15, last month joined the AGI Sport team as a sponsor to make the step up to Formula 4 from go-karting.
The weekend’s rounds saw six races, with Best’s team taking two race wins.
Teammate Nick Rowe won the third race in round one and the second and third races in round two at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne’s south-west.
Rowe took the chequered flag in round two’s second race more than five seconds clear of second-placed New Zealander Liam Lawson, who won the first race, with Best 16 seconds behind in fourth.
The race was slowed in part by the safety car, but resumed on lap five, where Best led the field with a brilliant getaway for a lap before he was caught by teammate Rowe.
Rowe remained in the lead despite a further safety car period.
Best now sits in ninth place in the overall points ladder. He gained 22 points from the weekend’s racing, putting him 24 points clear of teammate Sage Murdoch, but 96 points off the pace of leader Lawson.
Round three of the championship heads to Barbagallo in Perth from May 5 to 7.
Best said he was looking forward to the long weekend in Perth and hoped to have a podium finish in round three.
‘‘It’s just the three (races) over two days in Perth. But it’s going to be different. (It’ll be) a lot faster cornering speed and to get round you don’t really slow down, but that suits me,’’ Best said.
