After a behind-closed-doors team meeting on the weekend with coach Luke Morgan, two players have been named to lead the line for the Saints this year.
Centre half forward Jordan Wolff and midfielder Sam Martyn have been announced as co-captains for the upcoming Goulburn Valley League season.
The season kicks off for the Saints on Saturday afternoon away against last season’s wooden spoon side Mooroopna.
Wolff returns to Benalla after being an integral part of the Saints’ 2015 premiership-winning season.
Last season Wolff played his football with Barnawartha in the Tallangatta and District Football League before receiving a call back to Benalla.
Meanwhile, Morgan said Martyn worked hard last season under then captain Martinello and is now ready for a step-up this season.
‘‘He performed really well under our captain last year and with Jordan they’ll be our co-captains this year,’’ Morgan said.
Morgan will also be looking for the young players in the side to step up if the Saints want to get their season up and running early.
‘‘We will need a number to step up, but if Brodie Webster, Charlie Morrison, James Marchbank, Patrick Robinson and Lachlan Thompson can step up we’ll be in good stead.
‘‘They’re the guys that I’m looking to step up. That’s where the growth will come from, the older guys will play good footy but if those boys move from junior to senior footy and have good influence we can push on in the league,’’ he said.
