Coaches look to young and old

April 12, 2017

Benalla’s footy teams will look to youth or experience to guide them to victory this season, while the netball sides will look to last year’s leaders for guidance.

The Panthers’ netball and footy seasons are already under way, with the netball side falling just short 38-43 against North Wangaratta, and the footy side recording a big 20.17.137 to 6.12.48 win over the visiting North Wang last weekend.

On Friday the two Panthers sides will travel to Bonnie Doon for their respective second rounds.

The footy kicks off at 2.15pm, and the netball at 2.30pm.

Meanwhile the Saints sides are edging ever closer to their season openers in Mooroopna on Saturday.

Saints netball and footy sides travel to Mooroopna for their first-round matches — the footy kicks off at 2pm, and the netball 15 minutes later.

The Ensign caught up with Panthers coaches Harry Moran and Donna Wilcock, and Saints coaches Luke Morgan and Dylan Nexhip to see how they think the season will pan out and which key players will help them succeed this season.

Dylan Nexhip — Saints netball coach

Season aim: Top three in the league.

Key players: ‘‘Our captain Tylah Marchbank (pictured) — she’s had a huge preseason and we’ll be looking for her to have a big one in defence this year. And also Grace Thomas, our goal shooter, she just keeps getting better as she gets older and has more experience.’’

Luke Morgan — Saints footy coach

Season aim: Play finals footy.

Key players: ‘‘If Brody Webster, Charlie Morrison, James Marchbank, Patrick Robinson and Lachlan Thompson can make the step up from junior to senior footy we can push on in the league.’’

Donna Wilcock — Panthers netball coach

Season aim: A top-10 finish this year.

Key players: ‘‘Julieann Richardson’s (captain) experience and on-court leadership will be very important this year... Alara Jones (vice-captain — pictured) will rotate from attack to defence this year as she is a key player who can perform at both ends of the court. Bernie O’Brien is also one of our key circle defenders this year.’’

Harry Moran — Panthers footy coach

Season aim: Reach finals stage.

Key players: ‘‘Our fullback Harry Ellis and full forward Michael Donoghue (pictured).’’
