Goorambat on a roll

April 19, 2017

Goorambat recorded its second win of the Ovens and King Football League with a 23-point victory over King Valley.

The Bats found themselves down by two goals at quarter time but pulled the game back to win 18.12.120 to 15.7.97.

Cam Symes and Liam Hernan were dominant up forward from the start and kept the Bats in the match with strong marking.

Jared Brenna was dangerous at ground level and kicked roving goals while Matthew Ashton was also a contributor up front.

And despite challenges from King Valley, it was Goorambat who walked away the happier side.

Andrew Ellis continued his outstanding form at full-back and intercepting the ball and using his body and burst of pace all day.

The Bats sit in fifth place after two wins and will be looking to build as they are back at home next week against Whorouly, which is looking to open its account for the season.

Bats goal kickers: C. Symes 4, J. Brennan 3, L. Hernan 3, M. Ashton 3, A. Ramzy 2, A. Cook, J. Dalton, J. Webb.

Bats best players on field: L. Hernan, C. Symes, J. Dalton, A. Cole, A. Ramzy, C. Relf.

Reserves

In the reserves match an undermanned Goorambat side took on last year’s minor premiers and runners up in what was always going to be a challenging match.

The Bats started promisingly, but were no match for a running King Valley side as they trailed by 18 points at quarter time.

Brian Rheese in his first game for many years was solid in defence as was Brendan Humphrey.

The Bats trailed by 26 points at half-time after a vastly improved effort in the second quarter.

Dean Poole and Luke Hernan provided good targets up forward and Josh McCallum played with skill and poise around the midfield.

Tired legs in the third quarter saw the margin stretched to 50 points by three quarter time and that lead was only extended in the final quarter — the Bats downed by King Valley by more than 80 points when the final siren rang.

The Bats currently sit in ninth, and will be looking to bounce back against Whorouly which also finds itself 1-1 from two games in what will likely be a crucial contest.

King Valley 16.14.110 defeated Goorambat 4.5.29.

Bats goal kickers: L. Hernan 2, D. Hooper, D. Poole.

Bats best players on field: B. Doig, J. House, S. Briggs, J. McCallum, W. Rheese.
