Benalla United have bounced back to beat Southern Suns after a first-round loss.
United travelled to Whitfield for round two after a bye last week. The side wanted to come out and improve from their first-game loss.
The away side started the game with 16 players as a few players were away because of the Easter weekend — this made it hard as there would be no bench for the game.
United started the first quarter well with Max Plattfuss winning most of the ruck taps and Jack Connor and Josh Mazarak clearing the ball from the centre and moving the ball well.
United was able to get the first score on the board with a great goal on the run from Dylan Bell.
The first term finished with United two points in front.
The second was once again a hard-fought battle with the away side putting on three goals.
The United backline stood strong, being made up of Zack Cooke, Dylan Norman and Mitch Gander and with the back up from Vaughan Kirk they were able to keep the Suns to one goal for the quarter and led by 11 points.
After the break United came out and were flat.
The Suns were able to keep United scoreless and put on a five-goal term themselves.
At the last break the Suns had the lead for the first time in the game up by 11 points.
A deserved barking team talk from coach Mark Winzer at the break had the desired effect as United came out firing — James Webster and Shaun Pentreath took control and United was able to quickly get the score back level.
Baily Fulton kicking two great goals and Tom Molony kicking a goal from the boundary, United won the ruck tap again and drove the ball in to the forward line and a great kick of the ground by John Lee.
With five minutes to go United lost Jacob Culhane with a knee injury, so the side was down to 15.
United dominated possession of the ball and were able to run out nine-point victors.
Next Saturday United travel to Bright.
