The annual Joan Rowan Memorial Golf Croquet Social Day was held last Thursday and was well attended, with 13 clubs from the region fielding players.
A total of 56 players took part in the event including seven from the Benalla club: Trish Rogash, Doug Smith, Bruce Blay, Max Scholz, Merrilyn Robertson and Annette and Alex Adkins.
The winner of the day received the Joan Rowan trophy. It is a perpetual trophy donated to the club by Joan’s family in honour of their mother.
Joan was one of the founding members of the club and played for a number of years.
The standard of croquet on the day was very high, resulting in two players in equal first position, winning four games and 33 hoops each — Pat Garland (Wodonga) and Margaret Gray (Euroa).
A play-off was then held which was won by Pat Garland by one hoop.
The Joan Rowan trophy was presented to the winner by Judy Borthwick, who played with the Benalla club for many years and was a previous winner of the trophy in 2006.
Benalla Croquet Club will host the closing day event for the North Eastern District Croquet Association on Tuesday, May 23.
Following the many close games that occurred this week, it will be an event to look forward to.
There will be representatives from the NEDCA district playing on the day and the Benalla club invites spectators to come and view the action.
Benalla club playing days are Tuesday and Thursday of each week from 9am to 11.30am.
