The netball players in the mix to represent the Goulburn Valley League against Ovens and Murray have been named.
The top-class 24-player squad lacks no big names from the league with six of Kyabram’s premiership side included.
Wellman medallists Steph Vick (2016) and Ash Mangan (2008, 2010, 2012) as well as Lauren Pryde, Jemma Osborne, Belinda Lees and Elle Groves all are up for selection.
In a change to previous years when the side only played at the Netball Victoria Association Championships, the GVL will also take on Ovens and Murray in a full-length match on May 13 to coincide with the football.
Veteran Shepparton coach Tracey Brereton is again in charge of the side, with Lees her assistant.
While Brereton was looking forward to the side contesting a four-quarter match, she said the main focus remained on the test against all the other leagues at the round-robin tournament in Melbourne in June.
‘‘The interleague game comes up quite early for us against Ovens and Murray,’’ Brereton said.
‘‘It’s not the main thing like it is in the football, the main day is the Association Championships, but it’s good to come up against O and M and see where you’re at as long as they’ve got their best side in.
‘‘When I say the main thing is the Melbourne one, it doesn’t mean we’re not wanting to win this one.
‘‘At the Melbourne tournament in the quick games it’s a situation where you don’t get to do a lot of in-depth coaching.’’
Key inclusions to the team from last year’s side include new players to the league in Mooroopna goaler Monique Lenehan-Moustafa as well as Tatura duo Molly Boyle and Emma Ryan.
Brereton said the squad would be reduced to a team of 12 or 13 to be taken to the clash in Wodonga.
The under-17s side, led by Shepparton midcourt star and state under-17 coach Jacinta Todd, has also been finalised.
After 47 girls trialled, 12 were selected, headlined by four Shepparton United players as well as three netballers coming from each of the Bears and Echuca.
