Four top under-18 Benalla basketballers are United States-bound as part of the North East Bushrangers’ development squad.
Sam Burrowes, Lachie Kego and Sam Gebauer, 16, and Tom Moloney, 17, will head to Texas and North Carolina in December as part of the Bushies’ development squad tour of the US.
Some of the young guns have been part of the Bushrangers’ set-up for a few years, while others have joined this year.
Burrowes said the part of the tour he was most looking forward to was the American culture.
‘‘It’s just a taste of their culture really. It’s for three weeks in December and we’ll be playing some quality opposition in that time,’’ he said.
The development squad will play high school sides from Dallas and North Carolina.
Gebauer, who has coached a number of youth teams at Benalla Basketball Association in the past three years, said coaching was a potential career move for him in the future, and this trip would help him decide if it was right for him.
The four basketballers had been at the Benalla club for an average of six years each, and said they still ‘‘very much’’ enjoyed playing for the club.
The parents of the players are also helping out with fundraising for the trip. They are selling raffle tickets at practices and matches for a trailer load of red gum timber.
Along with that, they are also raffling a load of top soil, chip bark or mulch. Tickets can be purchased at Benalla Community Centre on Thursday night, or at Green N Grow Garden Centre, at 139 Grant Dve.
