Taipans win

Taipans recorded their maiden victory of the season last week in the Benalla Table Tennis Club’s winter domestic competition.

A-grade has been tough thus far for Taipans, but with a gutsy 3-2 victory over Echidnas, got their first points of the competition.

Meanwhile, Plovers were in top form outplaying Possums in a 4-1 victory.

Gavan Crothers was back to his best, winning both singles in style.

Rosellas stayed focused to edge out Wallabies for a tight 3-2 victory. Adrian Squires starred for Rosellas, playing well to win both singles before joining with Bruce Reid to take out the doubles in straight sets.

Kookaburras swooped on Owls, claiming a 3-2 victory. Brian Harrington and Jeff Austen wrapped up the match with a marathon doubles victory.


Gliders took the lead in the competition when they overcame a determined Frogs unit for a gallant 3-2 victory. Richard Morton was outstanding, winning both singles in a stylish performance.

Wombats also moved up the ladder after a 4-1 victory over Eagles. Greg Wippell starred, accounting for both singles, with John Spencer chipping in for one.

Redbacks also claimed their first win, outplaying Bullants in a 4-1 victory. Henning Aretz was in top form, winning both singles in style. Kaleb Lissenden combined with Aretz to take out the doubles in straight sets.

Numbats enjoyed a 4-1 win over Mozzies, with Ray Grant playing brilliantly to account for both singles in a classy display.


Hawks fought back to overcome Koalas, going on to a 3-2 victory. Andrea Cathcart and Jackson Squires played strongly to win a singles each, before taking the doubles in three sets.

In another close encounter, Magpies just held on for a tight 3-2 victory over Crickets. Kaye Grosser was the standout, playing brilliantly to win both singles in style.

Those results see Kookaburras leading A-grade, Gliders atop of B-grade, and Crickets and Hawks tied at the top of C-grade.

Swanpool table tennis

The Bombers’ Colin Exton and John Bajada obliterated the Cranes’ Tim Butler and Tom Smith 5-0.

In a close match the Hawk’s Jeff Austen and David Beer defeated the Wombat’s Andrew and Adam Marriott 3-2.

The Tiger’s Rob Erskine and Bruce Forster, also scoring 3-2, defeated the Farmer’s Pete Smith and Damien Young.


The Vixen’s Chris Seeley and Shayne Mathieson scored an upset 5-0 win against the competition leading Cockie’s.

The Saint’s Dan and Laura Grima scraped home to win 3-2 against the Wedgie’s Rosie and Jack Mathieson.

The Sharks forfeited to the Turtles.
