Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has congratulated Benalla’s Oscar Hide on receiving a $500 local sporting champions grant.
Oscar will use the grant to offset the cost of competing in the under-16 Basketball National Championships in Perth later this year.
‘‘Congratulations to Oscar and the other nine grants recipients in Indi for their hard work and commitment to their chosen sport,’’ McGowan said.
The Commonwealth funded $500 grants, awarded through the Australian Institute of Sport, to support talented young sportspeople who need to travel further than 125km to officiate or compete in state, national or international championships.
The grant can be used for travel, accommodation, equipment or uniforms.
‘‘There are great opportunities in local schools and clubs for young people to excel in sport. It can be expensive though to take the opportunities to the next level, especially for young people living in regional areas,’’ McGowan said.
‘‘It’s important to support them to reach their potential, so they become role models for others in the benefits of being active.’’
