Swanpool Bowls Club president Rob Mathieson declared the new season open on Saturday before play commenced.

Benalla

Benalla Bowls Club’s top bowlers travelled to Tocumwal for the annual Benalla-Tocumwal Shield last week.

Fifty-six Benalla bowlers travelled to play the Tocumwal Bowls Club on Saturday for the tournament, devised by club secretary Graham Moore, who was a past president in Tocumwal.

It was the fifth annual competition, with Benalla champions in all five.

This year’s result saw Benalla 192, Tocumwal 147.

Open social bowls at the club on Saturday had two games of 12 ends, with M. Sellars and M. Knezevic winning on a plus 17. Runners up were R. Nankervis and J. Lemin.

Friday’s jackpot pairs had 40 players including visitors.

Winners on the day were A. Green and W. Roberts with two wins and a plus six. Runners up were B and L Armstrong.

Last Wednesday’s jackpot triples saw 54 players compete in two games of 14 ends in the jackpot format.

Winners were D. McNulty, P. Merkel, I. Jenkins with 10 shots up. Runners up were Sneezy, H. Barber and F. Stevens.

In the indoor bowls, last Thursday’s action saw two games of 12 ends, with V. Haag, M. Cromie and M. Price coming out on top. Runners up were W. Billman, V. King and L. Billman.

Last Tuesday’s bowls saw three games of eight ends played. Winners on the day were M, Empey, B. Mollison and Jack Kemin with 13 shots up. Runners up were W. Billman, M. Price and R. Stolz.

Swanpool

Swanpool club president Robbie Mathieson officially opened the season on Saturday.

Mathieson welcomed 40 new and old players onto the green, with former Ovens and Murray champion of champions, and multiple club champion Doug Stewart sent down the first bowl of the season.

A minute of silence was also observed in remembrance of Peter Horner, a vibrant member of the Swanpool club for more than 20 years.

A traditional barbecue was also held on opening day, along with a bowls match and afternoon tea.

Winners on the day were Doug Stewart, Chris Armstrong and new member Greg Huby.

Pennant team practice will be held on October 7, along with a social match against Violet Town on the following day.

The 60 and over side is away at Benalla on Monday, October 9, before going to Corowa Civic on October 12.

Senior citizens

Last Tuesday saw winners in J. Quick (S), N. DeBuck, L. Scholz and L. Levy. Runners up were M. Ryan (S), N. Elkan, K. Black and L. Saunders.

Friday’s winners were M. DeBuck (S), N. Elkan and R. Leek. Runners up were A. Morris (S), R. Charlwood and G. Leek.

Saturday’s winners were V. Burke (S), N. Elkan and L. Levy. Runners up were C. Levy (S), M. Lyon, B. Ilsley and B. Symes.
