The Benalla Bushrangers start their 2017 season by hosting Greta CC at the Benalla Gardens Oval on Saturday.

Cricket in Benalla is back with the Bushrangers getting their season under way this weekend with a home clash against Greta.

Top-grade cricket in the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association begins on Saturday and will see the Bushies’ A-grade side host Greta at the Benalla Gardens in a one-dayer.

In A-reserve, the Bushies play Bright at the Friendlies Oval, also in a one-dayer.

Wangaratta District Cricket Association president Justin Triffitt said he was anticipating a strong match between the Bushies and Greta.

‘‘A-grade and A-reserve starts this week, and there will be some good games of cricket,’’ Triffitt said.

‘‘Greta and Benalla will be a good clash, as Greta have picked up some good A-grade cricketers, while the Bushies were reasonably strong last year, and now with Violet Town in the mix they’ll be very strong.’’

Triffitt said the grounds staff at the Bushies should be complimented for their hard work in preparing a pitch so early.

‘‘At Benalla they’ve had cricket on at the Gardens Oval for the past four weeks, so to have it out and getting the pitch sorted so early is just fantastic,’’ he said.

The Bushies will be holding a pie night tomorrow evening at the Gardens where the A-grade players will be presented with their caps for the season.

Bushies secretary Mark Saunders said the club’s top sides were raring to go.

‘‘We have been training for a little over a month now and are keen to get started,’’ Saunders said.

‘‘We are fielding sides in A-grade, A-reserve, B-grade, C-grade, under-16, under-14 and under-12s, and we also have an over 60s team.

‘‘We will also be running an all-girls side and the Milo and T20Blast programs for young girls and boys.’’

Training for those sides is at the Benalla Gardens on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

Saunders said the club welcomed kids of all ages to come down and have a go.

‘‘If kids or parents need more information, they can visit www.playcricket.com.au or give me a call on 0448 130 992,’’ he said.
