Benalla Giants under-16
The Giants are back on the winners’ list, defeating the Bulldogs in the local derby at the Benalla Showgrounds on Sunday.
After lowering their colours to the Mansfield Eagles, the Giants were determined to make a statement in the much anticipated match.
A six-goal first quarter set up the win, the final margin 65 points.
The fast-running Giants had too many options forward for the Bulldogs to cover, with Tyson Ryan (five goals), Luke Dunne (four) and Tom Levy (three) hitting the scoreboard.
Co-captains Ben Wheeler and Rory Wapling attracted plenty of the ball, while for the Doggies, Oscar Major was in top form while Aaron Cooke, Chelton Orchard, Zac Calvert and the Wright brothers battled hard.
In the under-14s it was again the Giants who had too much firepower for the Bulldogs, with the final the margin 48 points.
After trailing at quarter-time, the Giants kicked 13 goals to four to notch their first win of the season.
Jasper DeFazio was outstanding for the winners, kicking four goals and racking up multiple possessions.
Max Cullen, Louis Thivillier-Lefebvre, Matt Johnston and Ben Milner were the best players for the Bulldogs.
In the under-12 matches, Benalla Red won a hard fought game against Benalla White at the Gardens Oval.
While the final margin was 30 points, White had a number of chances to kick goals during the match and reduce the margin.
Best players for Red were Campbell Drury, Lucas Hales, Archer Irwin, Jack Quilliam and the Woods brothers, Cooper and Max.
For White, Ryley Ely, Chelsea Edgar, Blake Calvert, Rory Sammon, Jonty Priest and Jamie Walker played well.
Benalla Green made it three from three with a good victory over Wangaratta Kangaroos.
Joe Berry continued his great form in defence and forward, kicking three goals and rebounding strongly.
Sam Begley, Daniel Buykx, Lincoln Campbell, George Lithgow, Alexander Cairncross and Koby Cromie were the best players.
This weekend Benalla White takes on the Wangaratta Tigers on Saturday at the Benalla Showgrounds, while Red plays against Wangaratta Imperials at Wareena Park in Wangaratta. Green has the bye.
Benalla Bulldogs’ Under-14s and Under-16s will be looking to bounce back against the Tigers, while Giants will look to make it two in a row against the Imperials.
