Experienced Mooroopna too strong for Saints

Benalla Saints Women’s Football Team has suffered it first loss of the 2018 season going down to Mooroopna on Sunday.

After defeating Nathalia and Echuca, the Saints trailed at every change, the final margin 14 points.

The Saints were held scoreless in the first quarter and were unable to peg back the deficit in the final three quarters.

Kelsie Piscioneri kicked Benalla’s only two goals and was instrumental through the midfield and across the half forward line.

Defenders Beth Lewis, Jess Ritchie, Fiona Powles, Cheree ‘‘Bear’’ Tregoning, and Chelsea Bamford held the home side to just two goals after quarter time.

Ally Reid was the best of the midfielders, while Al Ballard worked hard in the ruck, and Donna Beckley competed strongly.

Hayley Rowan played her best game for the season on a wing, while Mickayla Humphries continues to improve and impact the game.

Co-coach Kylie Relf said while it was disappointing not to get the points, the Saints will learn plenty from the match.

‘‘We need to continue to improve our defensive play when we we don’t have the ball, and get back to one on one football,’’ Relf said.

‘‘There were some pleasing signs, however, we need to work harder for each other and take a team first approach into every game.’’

The final score: Mooroopna 4.7 (31) d. Benalla 2.5 (17).

This Sunday Benalla welcomes Kerang to the Showgrounds in round 5 of the Northern Country Women’s Football League.
