Brodie’s Bears to good for Benalla

By Meg Saultry

Benalla's Goulburn Valley League under-18 team fell to its fourth loss in a row on Saturday, suffering a heavy 105-point beating at the hands of top-six side Shepparton at Deakin Reserve.

The Saints were in much of the first half, trailing the Bears by only 17 and 32 points at quarter and half-time, but it was 12 goals to one in the second half that blew out the score.

Chelton Orchard (two goals) was the only Saint to hit the scoreboard more than once, while  David Button and Zac Calvert fought hard to be named in their team's best.

But it was Shepparton's Harry Brodie who was the star of the day, his five-goal haul snagging him best-on-ground honours.

With Benalla sitting in ninth place on the ladder, with one round remaining, the Saints will have a tough task ahead of them when they go up against Rochester in the final game of the season, having lost to the Tigers in round seven by 92 points.

Final score: Benalla 5.2 (32) def by Shepparton 20.17 (137)

Goals: C. Orchard 2, C. Daws, D. Button, A. Walsh

Best: D. Button, Z. Calvert, M. Gillespie, B. Purcell, A. Walsh, S. Kelly-Wiseman

On the run: Benalla's Bailey Davis takes up the ball with one hand.
