One point thriller brings Benalla Reds stellar season to end

By Meg Saultry

Benalla Reds under-12 campaign has come to an end, with the Wang Tigers holding on for a one-point victory in an elimination final of the Wangaratta Junior District Football League on Saturday.

Running out onto North Wangaratta Football Oval, it was the Tigers who got the jump on the Reds, leading by a goal for the majority of the match.

With plenty of contested ball, as well as tight defensive lines from both teams, goals were hard to come by for the Reds.

But with a minute left in the match, Benalla's Lochlan Duggan kicked a goal to bring the margin within a point.

And as desperately as the Reds tried to send the ball into attack one last time, the Tigers were just as rampant in holding up the ball, with the Tigers successful in their plight to progress to the next round.

Best on: Hamish Willett (middle) attempts to push past his opponent and contest for the ball.

Hamish Willett was judged best-on-ground for the Reds, while Xavier Wapling provided strong support through the midfield. Will Botten, James Martin, Rory Sammon and Ryan Hopgood were also named in the best.

Kye Miller was a standout in the ruck and slotted the first of the Reds' goals ahead of Duggan's.

Benalla Reds proved a force to be reckoned with this season, finishing the home and away season fourth out of a top five, with nine wins.

Score: Benalla Red 2.3 (15) def by Wang Tigers 2.4 (16)

Goals: L. Duggan, K. Miller

Best: H. Willett, X. Wapling, W. Botten, J. Martin, R. Sammon, R. Hopgood
